Amerykański projektant interesował się modą już od najmłodszych lat. W latach 70. rozpoczął studia na uniwersytecie Fashion Insitute of Technology. Jednak ich nie skończył. Podobno szkoła była dla niego nudna. Rozpoczął pracę we francuskim butiku Lothar's. 

Punktem kulminacyjnym w jego karierze był rok 1997, kiedy to został pierwszy projektantem i dyrektorem kreatywnym francuskiego domu mody Celine.
